Background of the Study
Indigenous languages in Nigeria, such as Igbo and Yoruba, boast complex morphological systems that contribute to their richness and cultural depth. This study evaluates morphological regularity—consistent patterns of word formation—in these languages, comparing affixation, compounding, and reduplication processes. Both Igbo and Yoruba exhibit unique morphological traits that not only define their grammatical structure but also serve as vehicles for cultural expression (Olaniyi, 2023). By analyzing a corpus of texts from both languages, the study investigates the extent to which morphological patterns are regular and predictable. It explores how these patterns facilitate language learning and preservation, particularly in the face of increasing globalization and the influence of dominant languages such as English (Bello, 2024). The research further examines the role of traditional storytelling and education in maintaining morphological regularity, shedding light on the dynamic interplay between language structure and cultural heritage (Ibrahim, 2025). Ultimately, this comparative analysis aims to contribute to language policy discussions and support efforts to revitalize indigenous linguistic practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of morphological regularity in indigenous languages, there is limited comparative research on the consistency of word formation processes in Igbo and Yoruba. Irregularities and exceptions in morphological patterns may hinder language acquisition and preservation efforts (Olaniyi, 2023). This research gap is particularly concerning in the context of modern influences that may disrupt traditional linguistic structures. Without a systematic analysis of morphological regularity, educators and language policymakers lack the necessary insights to develop effective language revitalization strategies (Bello, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by comparing morphological patterns in Igbo and Yoruba, providing a foundation for improved linguistic education and cultural preservation (Ibrahim, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare morphological processes in Igbo and Yoruba.
To evaluate the degree of regularity in word formation in both languages.
To propose recommendations for language preservation and education.
Research Questions:
What are the key morphological processes in Igbo and Yoruba?
How regular are these processes in each language?
What strategies can enhance the teaching and preservation of these languages?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of morphological regularity in two major Nigerian indigenous languages. The insights gained will inform language education and revitalization programs, supporting cultural preservation efforts and contributing to the broader understanding of African linguistic structures (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to a comparative analysis of Igbo and Yoruba texts and does not extend to other indigenous languages or informal spoken variants.
Definitions of Terms:
Morphological Regularity: Consistency in the patterns of word formation.
Affixation: The process of adding prefixes or suffixes to a root word.
Compounding: The creation of new words by combining two or more words.
